The following are common reasons the server is not recording:
- Recording has been turned off under the Tools/Stop Recording menu
- The camera has been set to "Recording Off" in the Tools/Cameras Setup menu.
- The Motion detection settings have set a high threshold and the system is discarding all the video
The following are common reason the server will not start:
- The Microsoft SQL database service has been stopped - try restarting the PC
- The Microsoft SQL database IP address has changed - Use Tools/Server/Database and change the IP address listed for the server
- You have installed Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 and the default firewall is blocking port 1433. This prevents Video Insight from communicating with the Database
Please visit the database repair instructions for more information.

Does Anti-Virus software conflict with the Video Server? In general, Video Insight does have any conflicts with Virus Detection Software. We have had reports of issues affecting the server when virus updates are applied but we have found nothing specific.
How do I repair a corrupt file?If you get a message that your file is corrupt when trying to view a recorded video, run the Video Repair utility:
- From the File Menu, select "Video File Repair"
- Select the file that needs to be repaired
- Click on Repair
The AVI file format used by Video Insight can be played with an Windows Media Player. To Export a file, right mouse click on the file from the left navigation tree and select "Save As".
How do I archive a video file? The only files that are open at one time are the 16 files that are currently being recorded. All other files are closed and can be moved, deleted or archived.
How do I burn a CD/DVD?Video Insight stores its files in a standard AVI format with the camera name, date and time stored on the file. The file format is compatible with any Windows Media player. Video Insight files can be distributed without the requirement of a special viewer or any conversion. If you need to archive or transfer a file to a CD/DVD:
- Right mouse click on the file and select "Save As"
- Select the CD/DVD drive
- You will notice a new icon in the lower right corner next to the clock that says "Burn to CD"
- Click the icon and "Burn the CD"
Move the file another location to ensure the system will not overwrite this file.
How do I add an extra drive to keep additional history? You can add additional disk space by using a simple RAID card and spanning the drives. These cards usually cost less than $100 and they allow you to take two drives and combine then into one. Another option is to use the Archiver to move history to another drive or computer.
How do I ensure the system automatically starts Video Insight after a power outage? If you are using a password on your Windows system, using the Control Panels/User Manager uncheck the box that says "Users must enter a user name". On Windows XP, run the command "control userpasswords2" and uncheck the box that says "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer".
Do I have to use a Server class of box for Video Insight? No, but we do recommend using a box that has adequate cooling to make sure the system is stable. You might consider installing some additional fans if you plan on using a desktop class system.
Can I get multiplexed video out?Yes, using our optional Video Out card, you can combine up to 16 cameras on a single TV monitor to watch live, uncompressed video. You can choose from 4,9 or 16 camera views.
What happens if I have a dynamic IP address? The best solution is get a static IP address from your ISP, however if that is not available, we recommend using www.noip.com. It's a free service that keeps track of your IP address changes.
Do I need to update anything if I change my IP address? You need to change two things in Video Insight. Please find the Server Setup page and change the IP address of the Server. Then under the Server Database menu, change the Database IP address to your new IP address. Restart the application.
What ports do I need open?- Video Stream (For Network Client): 4000
- SQL: 1433
- PTZ Control: 11111
- Web Client: 80
The left navigation tree needs to be refreshed. Try clicking on the server name. The tree will collapse and then reorder the files in the correct order.
Why am I unable to print? This occurs when the WMV codec is not properly installed. You will need to run the 'wmv9VCMsetup' located in the Utilities/WMV folder on the CD.
